Coptic Christianity is the primary denomination of Egyptian Christianity today. It is an ancient form of Christianity practiced throughout Eastern Africa, developed in Egypt under Saint Mark, the biblical writer of the New Testament Gospel of Mark. The Copts separated from mainstream Christianity over theological differences in 451 CE, developing independence over the centuries. Officially known as the Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria, Coptic Christians claim to be the modern protectors of the physical Ark of the Covenant. Believed to contain the original Ten Commandments brought down by Moses from Mount Sinai, it is said to be housed in a sacred site under armed guard in Ethiopia.
Coptic Christian talismans, often referred to as Coptic prayer scroll amulets, are small, protective charms that contain sacred texts, prayers, or biblical passages. These talismans have been used for centuries, particularly in Egypt and Ethiopia, as a form of spiritual protection and blessings.
The amulets typically feature a cylindrical or rectangular case, made from materials like silver, brass, or leather, and are designed to be worn as pendants. Inside, they contain hand-written or printed prayer scrolls with Christian invocations, Psalms, or excerpts from the Gospels. Some scrolls also include protective prayers against illness, evil spirits, or misfortune.
The tradition of carrying these amulets is deeply rooted in early Christian practices and reflects influences from both Coptic and Ethiopian Orthodox Christian traditions. They serve as a symbol of faith and divine protection, often passed down through generations.
