Maximinus was installed as emperor by the Roman army after mutinous generals assassinated Severus Alexander. Maximinus was the first Roman emperor of low birth. His accession marked the start of the Crisis of the Third Century, a period of Roman history defined by invasions, rebellions, and political instability. While Maximinus was away on military campaigns, the efforts to usurp him began. The first revolt occurred in Africa, and the rebels declared provincial governor Gordian I and his son Gordian II co-emperors. The Roman Senate threw their support behind this revolt. When it failed, the Senate chose two of their own, Pupienus and Balbinus, to rule as co-emperors. When Maximinus finally marched to Rome, the city of Aquileia shut out his armies. The Unexpected siege frustrated Mximus' starving troops, who eventually assassinated him. This coins was discovered in Europe. It was part of an old collection, and the collector's original notes in Romanian are included.
