(Every bullet may vary in size or shape, bullets are picked at random. Our choice only.)
The war on the western frontier is home to some of the most isolated and brutal battles that took place. The threat was real as confederate and union forces fought for control of the territory and native americans fought for survival. This bullet witnessed that history and was rescued from development by metal detectorist working in the area near the fort in the 1960's.
Old Fort Wingate, located in present-day New Mexico, has a rich history closely tied to the settlement of the American Southwest and the military presence in the region. Originally established as a U.S. Army outpost in 1862 during the Civil War, it was named in honor of Major Benjamin Wingate, who was killed in the Battle of Valverde during the New Mexico Campaign.
The fort's strategic location near the Navajo Nation and the Zuni Pueblo made it an important military installation for maintaining order and protecting settlers, traders, and travelers in the region. It also played a significant role in the military campaigns against Native American tribes during the Indian Wars of the late 19th century.
Over the years, Old Fort Wingate served various purposes, including as a supply depot, a cavalry post, and a training center for troops. It was also used as a base for scientific expeditions and surveys of the Southwest.
